Product Engineer (Full-Stack)
New York City · Hybrid · Full-time · $130K - $155K + 0.30% - 0.50% equity
Omi Health is the most trusted destination for pet health, and the first place pet parents turn to for guidance. We run proprietary longevity tests for dogs and combine them with user-reported and historical data to educate pet parents on how to extend their pets’ lives. Over time, we are building the longitudinal data layer for the entire pet industry, extending the lives of more than 200M dogs and cats in the US alone.
Thousands of pet parents are on our waitlist, we’re backed by a16z and advised by leading veterinarians. Sindu scaled consumer health brands from zero to hundreds of millions in revenue; Jakob is a second-time founder and ex-McKinsey. We met at Harvard Business School and started Omi because we got tired of guessing about our own pets.
You’d be an early engineer on a very small team, working alongside our founding engineer and directly with the founders. They own how the system works underneath. You own most of what people actually touch.
What you’ll own
Our stack: SwiftUI on iOS, React with TanStack Router and Start for our internal admin, Astro for the marketing site, and Python/FastAPI on Postgres and Supabase behind all of it.
- The app to extend pet lives. You’ll take features from a rough idea to something in people’s hands, and then keep going. We expect you to read the support threads, watch how people use what you built, and form your own opinion about what’s broken.
- The website, and everything that happens before someone becomes a customer. You’ll own our first impression with customers and how many of those visits turn into pet parents who stay.
- Commerce and everything around it. Checkout, subscriptions, orders, and the states in between, including the unglamorous ones where something failed and a person needs to see exactly what and why.
- Enablement for the people behind the product. Won’t be the most urgent thing you touch, but it may be the highest-leverage: every hour our operators lose to a bad tool is an hour they don’t spend on customers.
- The team you’re helping build. You’d be our second technical hire, which means how we work here isn’t decided yet. You’ll help set it and you’ll be in the room when we hire the engineers after you pick it up.
We don’t have a full-time designer and probably won’t for a while. You’ll get design files for the big things and nothing at all for the rest. Your job is to implement the first faithfully and have enough taste to handle the second yourself.
Your first 90 days
Ship something a customer sees in your first week. Inside your first month, take our internal ops dashboard from the thing our team works around to the thing our team works in. By day 90, ship a new customer-facing feature end to end; you helped scope it, you built it, and you can tell us how people are actually using it.
You’re a fit if
Roughly 2-4 years of professional experience. We care much more about slope than intercept.
- You’ve been productive in a stack you didn’t already know. Tell us about the time you were dropped into something unfamiliar and shipped anyway, and how long it took.
- You can work in a codebase you didn’t write. Read it, debug it, and extend it in its own idiom rather than around it.
- You think about the person on the other end. You’ve changed your mind about a feature because of something a user said. “It works” and “it’s good” are different sentences to you.
- You code with love for the user. You notice the spacing that’s off, the loading state nobody built, the error message that tells the user nothing. It bothers you even when no one asked.
- You want range, not depth, right now. iOS one week, internal tooling the next, a checkout bug on Friday.
- You actually care about animals. No need to have one yourself, but the passion helps you fit in :)
Bonus: SwiftUI or native iOS, Stripe and subscription billing, internal tools for non-technical operators, a design background, or something you built because you wanted it to exist.
You’re probably not a fit if
- You can’t explain code you shipped. Use whatever tools you like; own every line that lands.
- You want to be handed requirements and judged on whether you met them. You’ll get context and a goal, and we’ll expect you to push back on both.
- You want to work fully remotely. We generally value commitment over procedures, but we’d love to make your physical presence a part of Omi Health.
How we hire
We respect your time and want to help you show your best self. We'll dive into past projects and work through a real problem together, with no leetcode or whiteboard exercises.
- 130-minute intro call with one of the founders
- 2Deep dive with the founding team and technical staff to cover your past projects and decisions, plus a real problem from our roadmap we'll work through together
- 3Paid work trial, ideally with 1-2 days in our NYC office, on a real problem and with the tools you normally use (including AI)
- 4References and an offer
If we don't extend an offer, we'll tell you why. Apply even if you don't think you meet every qualification.
